Schengen student visa processing time
How long a Schengen student visa takes, as the authority itself publishes it. Published times are averages in normal conditions, and the gap between an average and your application is where most of the anxiety in this process lives.
At a glance
| Visa | There is no single "Europe" student visa. For courses longer than 90 days you apply for the destination country's own national long-stay "D" visa / student residence permit, issued under EU Directive (EU) 2016/801 (conditions of entry and residence for study). Examples of the official route names: Germany — nationales Visum zu Studienzwecken (national D visa, §16b Residence Act); France — VLS-TS "étudiant" (long-stay visa valid as residence permit); Netherlands — MVV entry visa + study residence permit, applied for by your university at the IND; Ireland (EU but not Schengen) — Long Stay "D" Study Visa, registered as Stamp 2. |

The published time
No single EU-wide figure exists; each mission publishes its own. Germany: the German Missions in India state that processing "may take several months" and that status enquiries are not answered within the first three months after filing (india.diplo.de). Ireland: Immigration Service Delivery and the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi publish current decision timelines and advise lodging the application well ahead of travel — check ireland.ie/en/india/newdelhi for the live processing dates. Netherlands: your institution files the application with the IND, which publishes its statutory decision period on ind.nl. France: driven by the Études en France (Campus France) calendar plus the consular appointment. Treat any single "X weeks" number as unreliable — book biometrics as early as the intake calendar allows.
What makes an individual application slower
- An incomplete application. Anything the officer has to ask for restarts your place in the queue.
- Documents needing verification — qualifications, employment history, unusual funding.
- Peak season. Every route slows before its main intake, which is exactly when most students apply.
- Administrative processing, where additional checks are triggered. It has no published timeline anywhere.
The first is the only one you control, and it is also the most common. A complete, internally consistent application is the single best thing you can do for your own timeline.
Working backwards from your intake
- Fix the date you must arrive — often before the course start, for orientation or accommodation.
- Subtract the published processing time above.
- Subtract a buffer for peak season and for any document you may be asked to supply.
- Subtract the time to assemble the application, including the financial evidence holding period.
- That is your application date, and it is usually earlier than students expect.
The financial holding period is what pushes this earliest. If funds must sit in an account for a continuous period before you apply, that period starts before everything else on this list.

The published time is quoted above from the official source. It is an average in normal conditions — peak season and any additional checks extend it.
Some routes offer a priority service for a fee. Where none exists, a complete and consistent application is the only lever you have.
