Schengen student visa documents checklist
The documents a Schengen student visa application needs, taken from the official guidance. The list is the easy part; the three rules underneath it are what applications actually fail on.
At a glance
| Visa | There is no single "Europe" student visa. For courses longer than 90 days you apply for the destination country's own national long-stay "D" visa / student residence permit, issued under EU Directive (EU) 2016/801 (conditions of entry and residence for study). Examples of the official route names: Germany — nationales Visum zu Studienzwecken (national D visa, §16b Residence Act); France — VLS-TS "étudiant" (long-stay visa valid as residence permit); Netherlands — MVV entry visa + study residence permit, applied for by your university at the IND; Ireland (EU but not Schengen) — Long Stay "D" Study Visa, registered as Stamp 2. |

The checklist
- Passport valid well beyond the course start date, with blank pages, plus copies of all previous visas
- Completed national long-stay (D) visa application form printed from the country's official portal (Consular Services portal for Germany, France-Visas for France, AVATS for Ireland) with signature
- Recent biometric passport photographs to the destination country's specification
- Unconditional admission / enrolment letter from the recognised institution (or IND-registered sponsor confirmation for the Netherlands)
- APS India certificate — mandatory for Indian applicants to Germany for study of more than 90 days (aps-india.de)
- Proof of financial means in the accepted form: German blocked account confirmation (EUR 11,904 / EUR 992 per month), Irish evidence of access to EUR 10,000, Dutch proof of EUR 1,130.77 per month, or French evidence of EUR 877.50 per month
- Sickness/health insurance valid from the date of entry for the whole stay
- All academic documents: 10th and 12th mark sheets, degree certificate, consolidated transcripts, and where applicable a provisional/degree completion letter
- Language proficiency evidence for the course's language of instruction (e.g. IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught, TestDaF/Goethe/DSH for German-taught, DELF/DALF or TCF for French-taught)
- Statement of purpose / motivation letter explaining course choice, career plan and ties to India, plus an up-to-date CV
- Proof of accommodation or an accommodation undertaking, and tuition/registration fee payment receipt where the institution has invoiced it
- Visa fee payment receipt and the biometric appointment confirmation from VFS Global or TLScontact
The three rules that decide a document
- Consistency. Your name, date of birth and parents' names must match across passport, certificates and bank papers. A single spelling difference needs an affidavit and weeks.
- Translation and certification. Anything not in the accepted language usually needs a certified translation, and "certified" has a specific meaning that varies by country.
- Currency. Bank statements, medicals and police clearances all expire. A document valid when you gathered it may not be when you submit.
Assembling the file
- Start with the documents you do not control — transcripts from an old university, police clearances, attestations.
- Scan everything at the required resolution before you need it.
- Keep originals together; several routes ask to see them at biometrics or interview.
- Make one list of what has an expiry and when, and check it the week you submit.
The most common avoidable refusal in every route is a document that was not asked for being missing — people read the list as exhaustive. It is a minimum; an officer may ask for anything that supports your case.

The official checklist is set out above. Treat it as the minimum rather than the complete set — an officer may ask for anything that supports your application.
Anything not in an accepted language generally needs a certified translation. What counts as certified differs by country, so check the official source linked below.
