Australia student visa processing time
How long a Australia student visa takes, as the authority itself publishes it. Published times are averages in normal conditions, and the gap between an average and your application is where most of the anxiety in this process lives.

The published time
Home Affairs publishes no single figure — it publishes a stream-by-stream guide based on recently decided applications. Checked on the Department's visa processing times guide tool on 14 August 2026: Higher Education Sector — 50% processed in 15 days, 90% processed in 7 months; Postgraduate Research Sector — 50% in 27 days, 90% in 3 months; Vocational Education and Training Sector — 50% in 7 months, 90% in 7 months. These are a guide only, change regularly, and are not specific to your application. Applications lodged outside Australia on or after 14 November 2025 are processed under Ministerial Direction 115 (before that date, Ministerial Direction 111).
What makes an individual application slower
- An incomplete application. Anything the officer has to ask for restarts your place in the queue.
- Documents needing verification — qualifications, employment history, unusual funding.
- Peak season. Every route slows before its main intake, which is exactly when most students apply.
- Administrative processing, where additional checks are triggered. It has no published timeline anywhere.
The first is the only one you control, and it is also the most common. A complete, internally consistent application is the single best thing you can do for your own timeline.
Working backwards from your intake
- Fix the date you must arrive — often before the course start, for orientation or accommodation.
- Subtract the published processing time above.
- Subtract a buffer for peak season and for any document you may be asked to supply.
- Subtract the time to assemble the application, including the financial evidence holding period.
- That is your application date, and it is usually earlier than students expect.
The financial holding period is what pushes this earliest. If funds must sit in an account for a continuous period before you apply, that period starts before everything else on this list.
Processing time — FAQs

The published time is quoted above from the official source. It is an average in normal conditions — peak season and any additional checks extend it.
Some routes offer a priority service for a fee. Where none exists, a complete and consistent application is the only lever you have.
