Australia student visa interview
Whether a Australia student visa involves an interview, and what it covers. Not every route has one, and where there is no formal interview there is often still a credibility assessment — which asks the same questions in a different form.

The position for this country
Home Affairs does not publish a routine, compulsory interview for the subclass 500 — the application is decided online in ImmiAccount, and the Department may instead ask for more information at any time (respond promptly rather than waiting for the deadline). Biometrics: the official page says "We might ask for biometrics. Most applicants will be advised immediately after submitting an application if you need to provide biometrics" and you are given 14 days to attend; biometrics (facial image + all 10 fingerprints) must be provided before travelling to Australia. Note for Indian applicants: India is NOT on the Department's published list of Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) locations (list stated as correct as of March 2026), so if biometrics are requested you will be told whether to use the Australian Immi App or attend a centre. Health examinations are the more likely in-person step: India is not on the Department's low-tuberculosis-risk country list, so temporary visa applicants staying 6 months or more generally need a medical examination, a chest x-ray (aged 11+) and a serum creatinine/eGFR test (aged 15+), done at a panel clinic using the HAP ID in ImmiAccount.
What is actually being assessed
Every student visa interview, whatever it is called, is testing one thing: whether you are a genuine student who intends to study, can afford it, and whose plan makes sense. The questions vary; that question does not.
- Why this course? An answer that could apply to any course is the most common weakness.
- Why this university, and why this country? Specific reasons, not rankings.
- Who is funding you, and how? Your answer must match your documents exactly.
- What will you do afterwards? Coherent with the course and with your background.
Preparing properly
- Know your own application. Inconsistency with what you submitted is the fastest way to a refusal.
- Be able to say what the course contains — modules, not just its title.
- Know who is paying, how much, and where it came from.
- Answer briefly and directly. Over-explaining reads as rehearsed.
- Do not memorise answers. Credibility assessments are designed to detect exactly that.
Our mock visa interview tool at /mock-visa-interview runs these questions with feedback, which is a better use of preparation time than reading lists of questions.
