About University of York
York is one of the plate-glass universities of the 1960s — it opened its doors to 230 students in 1963 — and it rose quickly enough to become a member of the Russell Group. The campus is unusual for England: roughly 500 acres of landscaped parkland, lakes and wetland divided between Campus West and Campus East, with every student belonging to one of eleven residential colleges. That collegiate structure gives a large research university a smaller social unit to belong to, which matters a great deal if you are arriving alone from overseas. Academically the university's reputation rests on several unusually deep specialisms. The Centre for Health Economics has shaped NHS and NICE policy for decades; the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence largely established that field's UK teaching tradition; History, Archaeology, English, Sociology, Environment and Geography, Psychology and Computer Science are all long-standing strengths; and the Department of Economics and Related Studies is among the most quantitatively serious in the country. The York Management School and York Law School are comparatively young but have grown fast, and the Centre for Applied Human Rights runs a distinctive practitioner-focused MA. The university also partners in the Hull York Medical School. For an Indian postgraduate the practical points are these. Most taught master's run twelve months full time, so you finish within a single academic year. Part-time study is not currently open to students on a Student visa, so budget for the full-time rate. Fees are strongly banded by subject: humanities, education and health master's sit at the £26,900 floor while the finance MScs in the management school reach £34,500 — a spread worth checking before you commit. York the city is small, walkable and considerably cheaper to live in than London, with direct trains reaching London in under two hours and Leeds in about half an hour.

Entry requirements
Typically for UK universities in this band, a three-year Indian bachelor's degree is accepted for master's entry, usually at a 2:1 equivalent — commonly 60-70%, or CGPA 6.5-7.5/10, with the higher end normally asked of graduates from less selective Indian institutions, and some courses in this band accepting a 2:2 (around 55-60%). English is typically IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, though some subjects ask for 7.0 or a higher per-band score. Exchange rates as of 18 Aug 2026 (30 days ago) — European Central Bank reference rates (AED via open.er-api.com), mid-market. The INR figure is converted from £ at that rate. Your bank's remittance rate will be worse than mid-market, and currencies move a percent or two a month, so use these for planning rather than as the amount you will actually pay.
