Master of Information Technology

The Master of Information Technology at Waikato combines theoretical foundations with supervised project-based learning and hands-on experience with an industry partner. A defining feature is a semester-long internship in which students work on real-world projects under joint academic and industry mentorship. It was developed through the Auckland ICT Graduate School partnership between Waikato and the University of Auckland and aims to produce work-ready ICT professionals. Students may specialise in Geographic Information Systems alongside their core studies. Teaching is based at the Hamilton campus, with the internship sometimes taken in Tauranga. What the fee covers: the international 2026 estimated fee for 120 points, which is one full-time year. Fee year: 2026. Before you budget: which figure applies depends on the route you are placed on, and the difference is large. Waikato's '2026 Estimated Fees' table gives three figures for this qualification: NZ$46,200 for 120 points, NZ$69,300 for 180 points and NZ$92,400 for 240 points, with 2027 estimates of NZ$48,510, NZ$72,765 and NZ$97,020. The points load depends on your prior qualification — with a three-year Indian bachelor's you may be placed on a longer route — so the total can vary by up to a factor of two. Do not treat NZ$46,200 as the price of the degree until you know which route you qualify for. Prerequisites

Students with an existing IT background need a relevant bachelor's degree, normally in Computer Science, with a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or higher in 75 points at 300 level including at least 45 points in Computer Science or a related field. Students with a non-ICT undergraduate degree are encouraged to apply and will be offered the 240-point version of the qualification. This changes your start options: the available start depends on the points version — 120 points and 180 points take A and B intakes, but 240 points takes A and C intakes only, so an applicant with a non-ICT bachelor's can start in Trimester A (March) or C Trimester (November) but never Trimester B (July).
