About this programme
The Master's programme in Physics at the University of Münster offers research-oriented studies in advanced fields of basic and applied science. It provides a highly flexible course programme that allows the students to specialise their studies according to their personal interest. During the first year, the students select courses in two subjects in physics from a list of the following topics: Materials Physics, Nano and Quantum Technologies, Nonlinear Physics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Photonics and Magnonics, and Physics of Solid State Nanosystems. These topics reflect the broad spectrum of research activities in the department. The subjects in physics are complemented by studies of an interdisciplinary subject such as biophysics, computer science, geophysics, mathematics or philosophy. Students with a limited proficiency in German may also choose "German as a Foreign Language" for their interdisciplinary studies. During the second year, the students conduct an independent, experimentally-oriented or theoretically-oriented research project in one of the research groups of the department. In this project, the students gain professional knowledge and understanding of the physics and methods in the chosen topic. The research project is completed by the Master's thesis and an oral presentation of the project results in a seminar talk. The first year of the programme consists of lectures, experimental and theoretical exercises in small learning groups, lab courses, and seminars. For the courses in the first year, students select three modules, two specialisation fields in physics as well as one interdisciplinary subject. These three modules are complemented by a module "Elective Studies in Physics" which allows the students to freely select courses from the list of courses offered by the Physics Department according to their personal interests. The second year is devoted to an independent research project for the Master's thesis carried out in one of the research groups of the department under the supervision of leading scientists in their respective fields. The project is split into two modules, the module "Professional Specialisation and Project Design" in the third semester and the Master's thesis itself in the fourth semester. PDF Download
