University of Liverpool

Liverpool is one of England's original red-brick civic universities, opened in 1881 to serve a port city then at the height of its commercial power, and a founder member of the Russell Group. Much of its reputation rests on subjects that grew out of that setting: it created Britain's first departments of oceanography, civic design and architecture, and it still runs the only veterinary school in the north-west of England. Medicine, dentistry, infectious disease research, materials chemistry - the Materials Innovation Factory is a large robotics-driven chemistry facility built with Unilever - and engineering are the strongest research areas, and the Management School holds triple accreditation. The campus is unusually coherent for a civic university: a compact quarter of Victorian brick and 1960s concrete on the hill immediately east of the city centre, so most departments, the Sydney Jones and Harold Cohen libraries and the Guild of Students sit within a ten-minute walk of one another. Liverpool itself is among the more affordable large British cities, with rents well below Manchester or London, and it has a long-established South Asian community alongside a large international student body. For an Indian applicant a few practical points matter. Fees differ sharply by faculty rather than by a single university rate: humanities and social science master's sit at the bottom of the range, science and engineering in the middle, and clinical health programmes such as advanced orthopaedics or clinical ophthalmology at the top - a spread of more than twenty thousand pounds. A GBP 2,000 deposit is normally required to hold a master's place, and the university runs automatic tuition discounts for applicants holding a first-class equivalent degree.
