Liverpool is one of England's original red-brick civic universities, opened in 1881 to serve a port city then at the height of its commercial power, and a founder member of the Russell Group. Much of its reputation rests on subjects that grew out of that setting: it created Britain's first departments of oceanography, civic design and architecture, and it still runs the only veterinary school in the north-west of England.
