University of Hertfordshire

The University of Hertfordshire began in 1952 as Hatfield Technical College, set up to train engineers for the de Havilland aircraft works next door, and it has never entirely shaken off that industrial DNA. It became a polytechnic, then a university in 1992, and its second campus — de Havilland, opened in 2003 on the old aerodrome — is named after the company whose Comet and Mosquito were built on the site. The two campuses, College Lane and de Havilland, sit either side of Hatfield and are connected by the university's own round-the-clock bus network, Uno, which also runs into St Albans and London. Academically it is strongest where that heritage points: aerospace and automotive engineering, computer science and cyber security, and a well-regarded astrophysics group at the Centre for Astrophysics Research that works on galaxy surveys and exoplanets. Beyond engineering, the School of Creative Arts has a serious record in animation, visual effects and film, pharmacy and life sciences are large, and Hertfordshire Business School runs one of the bigger postgraduate business portfolios in the region. Facilities are a genuine selling point — the Hertfordshire Sports Village, well-equipped labs, and one of the largest guaranteed-accommodation offers of any English university. For Indian postgraduate applicants Hertfordshire is a familiar name, partly because of its distinctive two-year master's structure: many programmes run over two years with a placement or internship year attached, which extends the time in the UK and improves employability before the Graduate Route. Location matters here too — Hatfield is about twenty-five minutes by train into London King's Cross, so you get London access without London rents. Be aware of the practical conditions: international students needing a visa pay a compulsory five thousand pound deposit, and a thousand pound discount is offered for paying the year in full at registration.
