UEA was founded in 1963 and built on a slope outside Norwich as a single self-contained campus: Denys Lasdun's concrete teaching wall and stepped residential ziggurats, a broad and a lake at the bottom, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at one end holding a Francis Bacon collection and a Norman Foster building around it. Everything a student needs, including the sports park, medical centre and the students' union, is on that one site, which makes the first few weeks after landing considerably less daunting than a scattered city university. Academically UEA is known for two very different things. The first is creative writing: it ran Britain's first MA in the subject from 1970 and counts Kazuo Ishiguro and Ian McEwan among its graduates, and the literature, drama and journalism programmes still carry that weight. The second is environmental science. The Climatic Research Unit and the Tyndall Centre put UEA at the centre of global climate work, and the wider Norwich Research Park — shared with the John Innes Centre and the Quadram Institute — supports strong plant science, microbiology, biotechnology and food-and-health research. For Indian postgraduates the practical draws are usually the computing and artificial intelligence MScs, pharmacy and drug discovery, biotechnology, and the Norwich Business School conversions in accounting, banking and business analytics, many of which offer a placement year. Norwich itself is a medieval cathedral city of about 200,000, consistently among the safest in England, well under two hours by train from London Liverpool Street, and noticeably cheaper to live in than the big student cities.
