University of Strathclyde

Strathclyde traces itself to John Anderson's bequest of 1796, which created an institution dedicated to "the place of useful learning" — a phrase the university still prints on its documents — and it received its royal charter in 1964 as Scotland's first technological university. The campus occupies a compact quarter of central Glasgow around George Street and Cathedral Street, so students live inside the city rather than commuting to it, with Queen Street and Glasgow Central stations a few minutes' walk away. Its reputation rests on two pillars. Strathclyde Business School is one of a small group of UK schools holding triple accreditation from AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB, and its MSc portfolio in finance, marketing, international management, business analysis and supply chain is heavily international. The Faculty of Engineering is among the largest in the UK and is unusually well connected to industry: the Technology and Innovation Centre, the Advanced Forming Research Centre and the Power Networks Demonstration Centre all sit within or alongside the university, and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland grew out of that work. Naval architecture and ocean engineering, chemical and process engineering, electronic and electrical engineering, photonics, and the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences are all genuinely strong. The university has twice been named UK University of the Year. For an Indian postgraduate applicant Strathclyde is the most research-intensive and most expensive of the Scottish options in this group, but it discounts aggressively: the university publishes automatic scholarships of £6,000 to £9,000 for eligible international students starting postgraduate taught courses, and the business school attaches a named international masters scholarship to many of its MScs.
