Dundee sits on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, and the university is folded straight into the middle of the city rather than pushed out to a ring road, which is one of the practical reasons students like it: lectures, library, halls and the high street are all inside a fifteen-minute walk. It began in 1881 as University College, Dundee, spent decades attached to St Andrews, and became independent in 1967. Its reputation rests heavily on the life sciences. Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design adds a strong design and animation stream.
