University of Brighton

The University of Brighton grew out of the Brighton School of Art, founded in 1859, and still carries that creative DNA: its art, design, illustration and fashion courses are among the best known outside London. It took university title in 1992 and today runs most teaching from Moulsecoomb, a short bus ride inland from the seafront, with further provision at Falmer. Beyond the studios there is real depth in pharmacy and biomolecular sciences, sport and exercise science, environment and sustainability, and health — it co-runs Brighton and Sussex Medical School with the University of Sussex, which gives its clinical and health master's unusual access to NHS teaching hospitals. For an Indian postgraduate applicant the practical draw is location. Brighton is roughly an hour by train from central London and half an hour from Gatwick, so you reach the London job market without London rents — though as a south-coast city with a small housing stock, accommodation is still expensive by UK standards and worth arranging early. The city itself is young, liberal and visibly multicultural, with an established South Asian community, a good spread of Indian grocers and restaurants, and one of the largest student populations per head in England. Course-wise the university leans applied: MSc programmes in pharmaceutical sciences, engineering, computing, digital media and public health draw international cohorts, and most taught master's run one year full time, followed by eligibility for the two-year Graduate Route visa. Note that international postgraduates must pay a £5,000 deposit before the university will issue a CAS, so budget for that at offer stage rather than at enrolment.
