About this programme

The main focus of the programme is on cognitive neurosciences. In the first semester, students acquire basic theoretical knowledge in cellular, molecular, systemic, theoretical, and clinical neurosciences as well as practical experience by attending courses on programming and laboratory animal science. The second semester allows students to focus on their individual interests by choosing three advanced practical modules. Consolidation and application of the advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and training of abilities in the area of experimental design and scientific communication is the aim of two lab rotations in the third semester. Both can be made in another institute or clinic in Germany or abroad, followed by a Master's project in the last semester. For further details, see: https://www.uni-bremen.de/en/mscneuro/. First semester: The first semester modules 401 to 404 comprise basic lectures in cellular, molecular, systemic, theoretical and clinical neurosciences as well as seminars and complementary methods (programming and laboratory animal science course, modules 414 and 415). Second semester: The second semester begins with an obligatory introductory week (3 ECTS). The basics acquired in the first semester are taken to an advanced level and applied in practical training. Students may choose three modules out of seven (9 ECTS each). However, every module is just offered once. Since there are some constraints with regard to capacities in the individual labs and time restrictions, students' priority choices cannot always be entirely fulfilled. Students decide for the first time on individual preferences. "Advanced Studies I" will emphasise the development of scientific meta skills more than former courses. The independent acquisition of information (professional literature), critical handling of data, analytical strategies of problem solving, cooperation and teamwork skills, and scientific communication capacity in speech and writing will be advanced and practised. In addition to choosing three compulsory optional subjects, students have to attend the lecture Computational Neuroscience II, Module 403c (Pawelzik/Ernst), which is taught throughout the whole semester. Third semester: The next higher stage of subject-related qualification and the further development of meta skills will follow in the third semester, where students achieve more independence during two six-week lab rotations or by practical experience gained in a clinic ("Advanced Studies II" with 15 ECTS each). Besides the institutes mentioned before, lab rotations can also be performed at selected institutes in Germany or abroad. These courses particularly aim at the consolidation and application of advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and training abilities in the field of experimental design and scientific communication. Fourth semester: At this stage, students are prepared to accomplish their Master's theses in the fourth semester (within six months) either in one of the departments of the lecturers or at various institutes or enterprises in Germany or abroad.
