Ulster University

Ulster University is Northern Ireland's largest university by student numbers, established by Royal Charter in 1984 out of the merger of the New University of Ulster and the Ulster Polytechnic, though teaching on the Magee site in Derry~Londonderry goes back to 1865. It is a multi-campus institution: a £364m purpose-built campus in central Belfast, which opened in 2022 and absorbed most of the old Jordanstown provision, is now the flagship, alongside Coleraine on the north Antrim coast and Magee in the north-west. The university markets itself as UK & Ireland University of the Year for 2024. Its academic reputation sits in applied, professionally-linked fields rather than classical research prestige: nursing and allied health, biomedical sciences, computing and cybersecurity, business and management, hospitality and tourism, and the well-regarded Belfast School of Art. Postgraduate provision is dominated by one-year taught MScs in computing, data analytics, business and management, which recruit heavily from South Asia. For an Indian postgraduate applicant the economics are the real draw. The standard 2026/27 international masters fee of £18,310 is low by UK standards, and Belfast has some of the cheapest student rents of any UK university city — a meaningful difference against London or the south of England over a one-year degree. Be aware that specialist routes cost more: the Executive MBA/MPA is £22,680 and a set of named MSc and LLM programmes sit at £20,490. Belfast is a compact, walkable city with a growing tech and fintech employer base, but a smaller graduate job market than Manchester or London.

Typically for broadly accessible UK universities, a three-year Indian bachelor's degree from a UGC-recognised institution at around a 2:2 equivalent — commonly 50-60% or CGPA 5.5-6.5/10, though each university applies its own conversion; IELTS Academic usually 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5-6.0, so prepare towards the higher end and check whether the UKVI version is required. A three-year degree is not the obstacle for UK master's entry that it is in the US, but degree class and subject background are what move the decision, and popular programmes at these universities still ask for a 2:1.
