About this programme
The students will gain core competences in global health and humanity, socially sustainable development and management, diversity, intrinsic motivation, autonomy, and transformational leadership by learning global policies and models, development, management, basic and applied research methods as well as expertise in communication. In learning, blended learning models for example Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) approach and Salmon’s evidence-based Five stages and e-tivity models will be realised. In addition to curricular studies, the students are expected to complete 5 ECTS study unit Developing and Management of Studying Skills in Master's Studies at the beginning of the Masters’ studies. This study unit enables the students in orientation as a higher education student in the Finnish educational system and in Laurea. The students will choose their complementary studies during the first semester. According to Laurea’s pedagogical model, LbD, it is beneficial that the studies, both the core and the complementary competencies, support the learning in the development / research project (= Master’s Thesis project). The students will work in small scale projects as project coordinators and in externally funded projects as junior colleagues according to their individualized aims. Practical placement studies are not included in the Global Health and Crisis Management (GH&CM) studies. In the complementary studies, the students gain skills in frontline, project, and quality management at local, national, and global levels applied in infection prevention, and control, nutrition as well as in crisis leadership and management. It is possible to select studies also from the other Masters' programs at Laurea or at Laurea’s national and international higher education partner institutes according to the personal study plan of the student by fulfilling the curriculum requirements. The total extent of the programme is 90 credits and it consists of core competencies (30 credits), complementary competencies (30 credits) and thesis (30 credits). It takes 1,5 years to complete the degree. Therefore, as a student, you should start planning and working on your development project (thesis) already during the first months of study by combining it as an essential part of your studies.Typically, you will have three days a month of contact teaching at Laurea’s Tikkurila campus. The campus is located near Tikkurila railway station, easily accessible from the airport and by train. The online learning environment promotes learning. You will write essays and carry out structured online assignments and exercises according to "e-tivity" instructions. You learn to use online tools as well as evaluate and peer review each other’s output. The exercises and essays may be preparatory assignments for the next contact teaching session, or they may serve as outcome assignments.Global Health studies are based on global needs and models. You are provided with basic and applied research and development competences to work in challenging areas. The problems addressed are global but may also be associated with phenomena such as immigration to Finland and the improvement of this process. Together with the Global Health Ethics, the actual programs transforming our world according to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, The One World of World Health Organisation, and The Triple Nexus of United Nations constitute the value basis of the Global Health and Crisis Management degree programme. As a university of applied science graduate, you may have a possibility to continue your studies in doctoral or master studies at universities. Many graduates are working as ambassadors of their background organisation, at reception centres, among immigrants, at non-governmental global, international and Finnish organisations and projects. During the studies, new career doors will open.If you have an open mind, are tolerant and enthusiastic and are able to go deep into a subject, this programme is for you.
