Why study in Germany
Germany is the one major destination where a good degree does not have to be paid for. Public universities charge no tuition to international students in almost every federal state — you pay a semester contribution of roughly EUR 150-350, which usually includes a regional public-transport pass. Baden-Wuerttemberg is the main exception, charging non-EU students EUR 1,500 per semester. Fees are set state by state and can change, so confirm the position for the state you are applying to. Private universities set their own fees and are a different proposition entirely.
That makes the real cost of studying in Germany a living cost, not a tuition one, and it is the reason the country attracts Indian students in engineering, computer science, data and AI, automotive and renewable energy. TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin and Stuttgart are the names most Indian applicants recognise, and the number of master's programmes taught entirely in English has grown steadily — you do not need German to be admitted to many of them, though you will need it to live comfortably and to work.
Two structural things matter for planning. Germany requires proof of funds in a blocked account before it issues the visa, so the money has to exist up front even though tuition does not. And after graduating you get an 18-month residence permit to look for work — one of the longest job-search windows anywhere — which converts to an EU Blue Card or a work permit once you are hired. Applications run 8-12 months ahead of the October winter intake, and admission is document-heavy: expect APS certification, and expect deadlines to be enforced literally.

Tuition is free at public universities in almost every federal state, which is where most international students go. You still pay a semester contribution of roughly EUR 150-350, which normally includes a public-transport pass and is far less than tuition anywhere else. The exception is Baden-Wuerttemberg, which charges non-EU students EUR 1,500 per semester. Private universities charge full fees and are not covered by this at all.
You must show EUR 11,904 for twelve months in a blocked account, which releases EUR 992 to you each month. The figure is reset annually and is tied to the maximum BAfoeG student grant, so confirm the current amount with the German mission before you open the account. Note that this is separate from tuition, and it is required even though public tuition is zero.
Not to be admitted to an English-taught master's — many are taught entirely in English and ask for IELTS 6.5. You will need German to work part-time in most jobs, to handle everyday administration, and to compete for graduate roles outside international companies. Most students who intend to stay start German alongside their degree rather than after it.
Yes, if you studied in India. APS (Akademische Pruefstelle) verifies your academic documents before you apply for a visa, and German universities and missions require the certificate from Indian applicants. It takes several weeks, so start it early — it is one of the most common reasons an otherwise complete application misses an intake.

Application deadlines are typically 15 July for winter and 15 January for summer, but many programmes close earlier and none of them treat deadlines as flexible. Working backwards from the visa appointment and the APS certificate is the safer way to plan.
