€1,300 a month for doctoral candidates, plus contributions towards insurance cover; short-term grants run 1–6 months and one-year grants 7–12 months Varies
We haven't confirmed this year's application window, and these dates move every cycle — so we won't print one. The official page is the only reliable source. Ask us and we'll track it for you and tell you when it opens.
Eligibility
For doctoral candidates and early-career academics, explicitly not postdocs. The restriction that rules most people out is simple: you cannot apply if you are doing your entire doctorate at a German university — this funds a research stay in Germany attached to a doctorate held elsewhere, not a German PhD. For the short-term grants you must also have lived in your country of residence for at least a year at the time of applying, and have a residence there. DAAD runs these as two separate durations with their own calls, so check which one your project fits before reading any deadline.
Applications go through the DAAD scholarship database, where each grant is a separate listing with its own call, deadline and document set — there is no single DAAD form. The substance of the application is the research project and a host in Germany who has agreed to take you, so the supervisor conversation has to happen well before the deadline rather than after an award.
