B2 writing asks you to take a position and argue it — a forum contribution, a letter to an editor, a formal complaint or proposal. The structure is close to an IELTS Task 2 essay, but the marks sit in different places: connectors and register carry more weight, and the examiner expects subordinate clauses you control.
A structure that fits the length:
- Einleitung. Name the topic and state your position. In der heutigen Diskussion über … / Ich
- bin der Meinung, dass …
- Argument eins, with a reason and an example. Einerseits …
- Argument zwei. Darüber hinaus … / Außerdem …
- The counter-argument, acknowledged and answered. Zwar …, aber … / Es stimmt, dass …,
- allerdings … This paragraph is what separates a B2 script from a B1 one.
- Schluss. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass …
Connectors worth owning, because each one also tells you where the verb goes: deshalb, deswegen, trotzdem (main clause order — verb second); weil, obwohl, da, damit, sodass (verb to the end); zwar … aber; einerseits … andererseits; nicht nur …, sondern auch.
Register. A formal letter uses Sie, avoids contractions, and prefers the passive or an impersonal construction where English would name a person: Es wird oft behauptet, dass … / Man sollte …
Two things that cost marks quietly. Writing three short paragraphs where the task asked for an argued position — length is part of the task. And translating an English essay: German paragraphs are built around the connector, not around the topic sentence, and a translated essay reads as one because the joins are missing.
