The same letter at A2 and at B1

Two answers to one task, both ours, with the differences named — because "write better German" is not feedback.

10 min read

The task. Your German course has moved to a different time and you cannot attend. Write to your teacher: apologise, explain why, and ask what you should do. About 80 words, formal register.

Answer A — around A2.

Sehr geehrte Frau Weber,

ich kann am Dienstag nicht zum Kurs kommen. Ich habe Arbeit bis 19 Uhr. Das ist ein Problem für mich.

Können Sie mir sagen, was ich machen soll? Gibt es einen anderen Kurs? Ich möchte gern weiter Deutsch lernen.

Vielen Dank.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen Ravi Menon

Answer B — around B1.

Sehr geehrte Frau Weber,

What separates them.

  • Subordinate clauses. B uses weil, dass, ob and falls, and puts the verb at the end of each
  • correctly. A is a sequence of main clauses. This is the clearest single marker between the two
  • levels in writing.
  • Register. "Leider muss ich Ihnen mitteilen, dass…" and "Vielen Dank im Voraus" are the
  • formulas a German reader expects in a formal letter. A is polite but reads as spoken German
  • written down.
  • Reason, not statement. A says there is a problem; B says what the problem causes — "es nicht
  • rechtzeitig schaffe". Explaining the consequence is what pushes a B1 answer past A2.
  • A conditional path. "Falls das nicht geht, wäre ich … dankbar" anticipates an answer. That
  • one sentence does more for the impression of control than any vocabulary.
  • Both cover all three content points. Neither is penalised on task fulfilment, which is worth
  • saying: A is a perfectly adequate A2 answer, not a bad one.

Notice that B is not longer by much and contains no rare words. The difference is grammar and formula, and both are learnable in a fortnight.

Do this now

Five to ten minutes. This is the part that moves your band.

Rewrite answer A at B's level, changing only the grammar: turn two of its main clauses into weil or dass clauses, and add one falls sentence. Ten minutes. Then compare with B — not to copy it, but to see which of the five differences you produced on your own.
