Physics in Germany: All 12 Taught in English

7 min read · 20 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

We list 12 Physics master's in Germany at eleven institutions, and every single one is taught in English. That is the strongest language position of any German subject list we hold, and it is the reason physics is one of the few disciplines where a zero-German applicant loses nothing by choosing Germany.

Twelve of twelve in English

No qualifications, no "German and English" hybrids, no exceptions on the list. Eleven of the twelve run 24 months and one runs 36.

Compare that with German mechanical engineering, where six of sixteen expect German, or with psychology at nine of ten. Physics is an internationally conducted subject and German departments teach it that way — the research group you join will be publishing and very likely talking in English.

What that does not change is life outside the lab, where B1-level German is the difference between living in Germany and visiting it for two years. The language is not an admission requirement here; it is still worth learning.

The fee section, and the one exception that bites

Most of this list charges nothing. German public universities are state-funded and do not charge tuition for most master's courses, to Indian students as much as to German ones.

But unlike our mechanical and civil engineering lists, this one is not clean of the Bavaria exception. Bavaria leaves the tuition decision to each institution, and the Technical University of Munich is on this list. TUM's published figures for non-EU students are €4,000 to €6,000 a semester for a master's, rising to €6,800 at the top from winter semester 2027/28 — which is the intake many readers of this page are aiming at. We hold no verified fee on the TUM row, so our catalogue makes no claim either way; TUM's own fees page does.

Two other rows carry a figure we have not verified: a quantum technologies programme at €2,100 and an Erasmus Mundus joint master's at €970. Erasmus Mundus programmes legitimately charge, and joint programmes are the other common exception to Germany being free — so neither number is surprising, but neither is confirmed by us.

Everywhere else on the list the cost is the semester contribution, roughly €70 to €430, plus the visa requirement of €992 a month set on 1 January 2025 — about €11,904 for the year, normally in a blocked account.

The practical instruction is short: check the fee on the university's own page for every programme on your shortlist, and check it twice for anything in Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg. Our free check tells you which states charge in 60 seconds.

Where the 12 are

By city: Landau (2), then one each in Munich, Münster, Saarbrücken, Dortmund, Bielefeld, Berlin, Bonn, Leipzig, Paderborn and Siegen.

The institutions are the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau, Technical University of Munich, University of Münster, Saarland University, TU Dortmund University, Bielefeld University, Freie Universität Berlin, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Universität Leipzig, Universität Paderborn and Universität Siegen.

Eleven institutions for twelve programmes, in eleven different cities. Physics departments in Germany are distributed rather than concentrated, and a shortlist is built across the country rather than inside one region — which matters for cost, because Munich and Berlin rents are not Siegen or Paderborn rents.

Two years, and what they are for

The 24-month shape is the German norm and it earns its keep in physics more clearly than in most subjects. A master's thesis in a working research group is the thing a PhD application is actually read for, and it is also how most people find the supervisor who later takes them on. A twelve-month British master's rarely leaves room for either.

If a doctorate is the plan — and in physics it frequently is — the German two-year master's followed by a funded position is one of the better-value routes into research anywhere, which is the real argument for this list over a cheaper or faster one.

Entry requirements

All twelve record an English requirement, in formats varied enough that no single number covers them. IELTS Academic 6.5 is the common anchor, TOEFL iBT alternatives appear with per-section minimums, and several programmes also accept UNIcert® or telc — European certificate systems most Indian applicants have not met.

Beyond the language, German physics admissions read your transcript module by module: theoretical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and the mathematics behind them are what get counted, and a strong overall percentage without those is a weaker application than a moderate one with them. Indian applicants also need the APS certificate before applying. How the APS works, and which intake to aim at.

Catalogue figures counted from our published listings on 20 October 2026, after an attribution audit retired programme rows that had been assigned to the wrong institution. Nine of the twelve carry a verified tuition position; the TUM, quantum-technologies and Erasmus Mundus rows do not, and are described as unverified above. TUM's published master's fees, the state tuition rules, the semester contribution range and the proof-of-funds figure were read on 16 October 2026. Fees are revised — confirm on the university's own page before you budget.
