How to apply for a Ireland student visa

The Ireland student visa process, step by step, from the official guidance. The order matters more than the list does — several steps cannot start until an earlier one has finished, and that dependency is what sets your real timeline.

The process

Secure an unconditional offer on an ILEP-listed course. Ireland only issues a long stay study visa for a programme on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) — English language programmes of at least 25 weeks, or higher education programmes at NFQ Levels 6-10, professional awards and foundation programmes. The acceptance letter must confirm full-time enrolment involving a minimum of 15 hours of organised daytime tuition each week.

Pay the required share of tuition fees BEFORE you apply, and keep the transfer proof. ISD rule: where course fees are less than €6,000 you must pay the fees in full to the college before applying; where fees are more than €6,000 you must pay at least €6,000 before applying. You must evidence this with a copy of the electronic transfer of funds (ETF) to the college's Irish bank account, or a receipt from an approved student fees payment service such as Pay to Study / TransferMate (formerly ISPS).

Build the €10,000 financial file, insurance and police clearance. Assemble six months of bank statements on headed paper for yourself and every sponsor, signed sponsorship letters with sponsor ID, explanations for any large or irregular lodgements, the ISD Financial Summary Form, and private medical insurance evidence (unless the college arranged it and says so in your acceptance letter). The New Delhi checklist also requires a police clearance certificate for any country where you held residence permission in the five years before applying.

Create the application online in AVATS. Apply through the Automated Visa Application and Tracking System (AVATS) from India, up to 3 months before your date of travel — the New Delhi office advises applying up to 90 days in advance. AVATS produces an Application Summary Form which you must print, sign and date; it tells you where to submit your documents and how to pay.

Pay the visa fee, book VFS, and give fingerprints in person. Pay the €60 single-entry (or €100 multi-entry) fee plus the VFS service charge, then attend your VFS Global visa application centre appointment in person — Indian residents must provide fingerprints every time they apply. Bring the signed summary form, the VFS payment receipt and the completed NDVO study checklist.

Submit original documents within 30 days and wait for the decision. ISD requires the supporting documents to reach the application office within 30 days of creating the AVATS application, and originals (not photocopies, except where stated) with certified translations for anything not in English or Irish. New Delhi publishes 4-8 weeks for a study decision; do not book flights before you have the outcome, and answer any call from the Embassy.

Land in Ireland, then register with ISD within 90 days for your Stamp 2 IRP. The visa only allows you to travel — the immigration officer at the border grants entry, so carry copies of your visa file. You must then register your permission with Immigration Service Delivery within 90 days of arrival (Burgh Quay, Dublin 2 or a regional office). At the appointment your photograph and fingerprints are taken, you pay the registration fee (up to €300, by card), and the Irish Residence Permit card carrying your Stamp 2 is posted to you.

Where the dependencies bite

  • The offer comes before almost everything. Most routes cannot begin without an unconditional place.
  • Financial evidence has a holding period, which starts before the application and cannot be compressed.
  • A loan sanction letter, where you are using one, sits between the offer and the application.
  • Biometrics and medicals are appointment-based, and appointment availability is the hidden constraint in peak season.

Before you submit

  1. Read your own application back as an officer would, looking for anything unexplained.
  2. Check every date and figure against the supporting document it comes from.
  3. Confirm the fee and the route are the current ones on the official source below.
  4. Keep a complete copy of everything you submitted, in the order you submitted it.

A refusal is far more expensive than a delay: it must be disclosed on future applications to several countries, and it is harder to explain than a late submission. If something is not ready, the cost of waiting a week is usually lower than it feels.

Work backwards from your arrival date through the published processing time, the document assembly and the financial holding period. That date is usually earlier than students expect.

Most routes require an unconditional offer or its equivalent before the visa application can begin. The steps above set out the order for this country.
