Ireland student visa documents checklist

The documents a Ireland student visa application needs, taken from the official guidance. The list is the easy part; the three rules underneath it are what applications actually fail on.

At a glance

VisaLong Stay 'D' Study Visa (called the "long term study visa" by Immigration Service Delivery) — applied for online through AVATS, and registered in Ireland after arrival as Stamp 2 student permission

The checklist

  • Signed and dated AVATS Application Summary Form, plus the VFS payment receipt and the completed New Delhi study visa checklist
  • Current passport, valid for at least 12 months after your intended date of arrival in Ireland, with photocopies of the biographic pages and all stamps/visas from every previous passport
  • Two passport-sized colour photographs no more than 6 months old, signed on the back in your own handwriting with your AVATS Visa Application Transaction Number, meeting ISD's photograph rules
  • Application letter stating your name and address, why you want to come to Ireland, why the course follows from your education/employment history, your arrival and departure dates, family in Ireland or the EU, and your written commitment to obey visa conditions, not rely on public services and leave before your permission expires
  • Unconditional letter of acceptance from an ILEP-listed college, confirming full-time enrolment of at least 15 hours organised daytime tuition per week, the course details, fees payable, fees paid, and whether the college has taken out medical insurance on your behalf
  • Proof of fee payment — copy of the electronic transfer of funds to the college's Irish bank account (showing both beneficiary and sender details) or a receipt from an approved fees payment service such as Pay to Study / TransferMate
  • Evidence of academic ability: all qualification awards and individual semester mark sheets; Indian applicants are asked to submit DigiLocker versions alongside the originals (secondary-level certificates are required when applying for an NFQ Level 7 or 8 bachelor degree)
  • English language test certificate from an accepted provider, issued within 2 years of the expected course start date (for higher education the visa minimum is IELTS Academic 5.0, TOEFL iBT 61, PTE Academic 30, Duolingo 75 or equivalent B2-level result; the college's own requirement may be higher)
  • Personal bank statements on headed paper covering the last six months showing your name, address, account number and account type, with large or irregular lodgements fully explained — plus, for sponsored students, signed sponsorship letters, sponsor ID documents, sponsor bank statements and employment or business evidence
  • Financial Summary Form (Summary of Finances) — ISD requires all long stay study visa applicants to complete this form
  • Evidence of private medical insurance covering your stay (or confirmation in the acceptance letter that the college arranged it)
  • Police clearance certificate for every country where you held residence permission in the 5 years before applying (dated within six months of application for your country of current residence), plus a letter and the original refusal letters detailing any previous visa refusal for any country, and an explanation of employment history covering gaps since your last full-time education

The three rules that decide a document

  1. Consistency. Your name, date of birth and parents' names must match across passport, certificates and bank papers. A single spelling difference needs an affidavit and weeks.
  2. Translation and certification. Anything not in the accepted language usually needs a certified translation, and "certified" has a specific meaning that varies by country.
  3. Currency. Bank statements, medicals and police clearances all expire. A document valid when you gathered it may not be when you submit.

Assembling the file

  • Start with the documents you do not control — transcripts from an old university, police clearances, attestations.
  • Scan everything at the required resolution before you need it.
  • Keep originals together; several routes ask to see them at biometrics or interview.
  • Make one list of what has an expiry and when, and check it the week you submit.

The most common avoidable refusal in every route is a document that was not asked for being missing — people read the list as exhaustive. It is a minimum; an officer may ask for anything that supports your case.

The official checklist is set out above. Treat it as the minimum rather than the complete set — an officer may ask for anything that supports your application.

Anything not in an accepted language generally needs a certified translation. What counts as certified differs by country, so check the official source linked below.
