About this programme

The University of Manitoba's MSc in Computer Science is a two-year thesis-based degree in Winnipeg. Students complete 12 credit hours of coursework at the 7000 level or higher, including a three-credit-hour Research Methodologies course, and must write and successfully defend a research thesis. Research areas include robotics, bioinformatics, computational finance and human-computer interaction. The department offers competitive funding including the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. What the fee covers: the international full-time rate. UM's 2026-2027 'All other master's programs' schedule states an international programme fee of CAD 7,186.36 per term for Terms 1 and 2 only, then a continuing fee of CAD 800.00 per term. The figure shown is those two fee-charging terms, which is effectively the whole programme fee rather than a charge that repeats every year. Fee year: 2026-27. Before you budget: two UM sources agree on the structure. The registrar's schedule gives CAD 7,186.36 per term for international students on 'All other master's programs', charged in Terms 1 and 2, then CAD 800.00 per term continuing; the programme page states 'Program fees are assessed in the first two terms of study, followed by a continuing fee in the third and any subsequent terms.' So the real cost of the degree is about CAD 14,372.72 plus roughly CAD 800 a term after that — genuinely one of the cheapest research master's at a major Canadian research university. Mandatory extras: the Manitoba International Student Health Plan at CAD 440 in Fall plus CAD 880 in Winter, CAD 1,320 a year, plus student services, library, technology and U-Pass fees. No English test scores are shown because none could be confirmed on the pages read. The real gate is the supervisor: this is a thesis-only degree, and UM's page says 'Applicants require a letter of support from a faculty member who is willing to act as their supervisor should they be accepted for admission. They should contact faculty before applying to inquire about the possibility of supervision.' No supervisor means no admission, and on a 7.2 CGPA from a tier-3 college that is a hard step — start contacting faculty early. Where the requirements come from: the first sentence of the entry line is on the programme's own page (https://umanitoba.ca/explore/programs-of-study/computer-science-msc). The numeric minimum and the full English table are the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements the programme page defers to (https://umanitoba.ca/graduate-studies/graduate-student-admissions/requirements), so they are university-wide rather than degree-specific.
