About this programme

UM's MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering is a two-year terminal course-based degree in Winnipeg that combines coursework with an engineering project and does not provide access to a PhD. Students complete a minimum of 24 credit hours, including at least 9 credit hours at or above the 7000 level from the ECE department, plus an advisor-approved engineering project worth at least the equivalent of 6 credit hours. The department describes it as industrially oriented and aimed at practising engineers. The department houses nine active research groups and specialised laboratories. What the fee covers: the international full-time rate. UM's 2026-2027 'All other master's programs' schedule states an international programme fee of CAD 7,186.36 per term for Terms 1 and 2 only, then a continuing fee of CAD 800.00 per term. Fee year: 2026-27. Before you budget: the fee line is confirmed on UM's registrar schedule — international CAD 7,186.36 per term for Terms 1 and 2, then CAD 800.00 per term — so roughly CAD 14,372.72 for the fee-charging terms. The minimum GPA is 3.0. Compulsory MISHP health insurance is CAD 1,320 a year on top. A co-op work term fee of CAD 462.85 appears on UM's schedule for the M.Eng Biosystem; ECE co-op fees are not confirmed. One thing to check with the department: UM requires a letter of support from a supervising faculty member for its thesis-based MSc in Computer Science. Whether the same gate applies to this course-based MEng could not be confirmed on the pages read, so ask the Electrical and Computer Engineering department directly before you build a plan around it — if it does apply, the supervisor rather than the money is the binding constraint.
