Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System

Society needs experts with a multidisciplinary education in atmospheric and Earth and Climate System sciences. Climate change, air quality and extreme weather are matters of global concern, which are still inadequately understood from the scientific point of view. Not only must further research be done, but industry, public authorities and businesses also need environmental specialists with a strong background in natural sciences.  Master’s Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences (ATM-MP) is answering these needs. The programme educates all meteorologists in Finland for weather forecasting, meteorological research and aviation safety. We educate experts in hydrosphere geophysics to work in the fields of cryology, hydrology and oceanography; and experts in atmospheric chemistry and aerosol physics to work on challenges related to air quality. The study track on biosphere-atmosphere cycles focuses on links between biological, chemical and physical processes that occur within the Earth system, with emphasis on forest science. The interdependencies between climate system and human activities, and the implications for sustainable development are studied in the Climate and Sustainability track. The education you gain with us is based on top-level research covering for example the following areas: Understanding the climatic feedbacks and forcing mechanisms related to aerosols, clouds, hydrological and biogeochemical cycles; Developing, refining and utilising the newest measurement and modelling techniques, from quantum chemistry to observations and models of global earth systems; Improving the performance of numerical weather prediction and climate models; Dynamics of weather systems and their response to climate change; Linkages of atmospheric clusters and aerosol particles to atmospheric chemistry  Biogeochemical cycles of water, carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen; Polar oceanography and cryology, in particular exchange processes between the ocean, atmosphere and ice shelves; and Interdependencies between climate systems and human activities, and implications for sustainable development Upon graduating from the Programme you will have competence in Applying experimental, computational and statistical methods to obtain and analyse atmospheric and environmental data; Practical applications of your studies from everyday weather forecasting to solving global challenges such as climate change, air pollution, deforestation and issues related to water resources, eutrophication and sea level rise; Forming a scientific hypothesis and testing it using an appropriate experimental or modelling methods; and Communicating results in a clear and logical manner. The Master's Programme in Meteorology, Atmospheric and Climate-System Sciences is offered by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. You can find further information about the studies on the Master's programme website.
