About Universitat de Barcelona

The Universitat de Barcelona is the oldest and, by most research measures, the strongest university in Catalonia, and it consistently sits at or near the top of Spanish national rankings. It is not a single-campus institution: teaching is spread across the city, with the historic 19th-century Edifici Historic on Gran Via anchoring humanities and philosophy, the Diagonal campus housing economics, law and business, and the Bellvitge and Clinic campuses handling medicine and health sciences. That dispersal is worth understanding before you arrive, because your faculty determines which part of Barcelona you will actually live and study in. UB's research reputation is heaviest in medicine and the life sciences, chemistry, economics and earth sciences; it hosts a large share of Catalonia's research institutes and its hospital-linked clinical research is genuinely internationally competitive. For an Indian postgraduate applicant, the single most important structural fact is language. A substantial number of official master's degrees are taught wholly or partly in Catalan or Spanish, and the pool of fully English-taught master's programmes is real but limited, concentrated in economics, business, biomedicine, international relations and some data-oriented programmes. Check the language of instruction on the individual programme page before anything else. The second thing to know is the fee structure. UB is a public university, so tuition is set per ECTS credit by Catalan government decree rather than as a headline annual price, and non-EU students who are not resident in Spain pay a higher per-credit rate than EU and resident students. The practical effect is that a standard 60-credit master's year costs a fraction of what an equivalent UK degree costs, which makes UB unusually good value even after accounting for Barcelona's relatively high rents. Post-study work rights in Spain have widened in recent years, and Barcelona's start-up, pharma and tourism economies are the obvious graduate destinations.

Entry requirements

Typically for the more broadly accessible Spanish universities, a recognised bachelor's in a related subject with a pass-level record (often around 55–60%) is enough; note that Spanish degrees run four years (240 ECTS), so a three-year Indian bachelor's is normally accepted only once the university checks it as giving access to master's study — worth confirming before you apply. Language is the real gate here: Spanish-taught master's usually expect around B2 or higher, English-taught ones typically IELTS 6.0–6.5, and while some universities accept a medium-of-instruction letter from your Indian university, plan on sitting the test unless yours has confirmed otherwise. Places are often decided as applications arrive within set intake windows rather than in one ranked round, so applying early helps.
