Master's Programme in Mathematics (MSc)

The Master's degree programme is a postgraduate course for students seeking further specialisation of their own choice. Students at the University of Regensburg can explore the following areas of research: Arithmetic Geometry Global Analysis and Geometry Applied Analysis Students have the possibility to choose a minor subject and general courses. At the end of the programme, students write their own academic paper - the Master's thesis. The Master's degree course at the University of Regensburg introduces students to current research issues in mathematics. It also provides a strong foundation to pursue a doctoral degree at an international level. Thanks to the SFB "Higher Invariants" and the Graduate School "Interfaces, Complex Structures, and Singular Limits in Continuum Mechanics" the mathematical faculty is highly visible internationally. Courses are taken in at least two of three research specialisations (36 CP in total): Arithmetic Geometry (Algebraic Number Theory, Algebraic Geometry, ...) Global Analysis and Geometry (Differential Geometry, Algebraic Topology, ...) Applied Analysis (Functional Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, ...) In addition, the student chooses an area of specialisation (18 ECTS have to be acquired), upon which the Master's thesis (30 ECTS) is focused. Also mandatory is a Seminar Module (9 ECTS). In addition to the above mathematical courses, the student chooses a "minor subject" in which at least 12 ECTS are required. Possible minor subjects include: actuarial science, business administration, chemistry, computational science, philosophy, physics, economics or business informatics. It is also possible to take further mathematical courses as a minor subject. Another part are courses in areas of "general interest" (like a German language course) where at least 8 ECTS are required. This elective module covers the whole course programme of the university and opens up the possibility to acquire special professional and soft skills (for example, by attending language courses, presentation and rhetoric events, computer courses).
