About this programme
Building on a Bachelor's degree in geosciences, the aim of the Master's degree programme is to train scientists who are able to answer questions relating to groundwater protection, groundwater management and the remediation of groundwater resources (especially mining water) from a geoscientific perspective. However, knowledge of the business side and questions of environmental law and the general management of georesources must also be taken into account. Our students are trained to become versatile and co-operative specialists. They are also able to manage projects independently and take on management responsibility. In the Master's degree programme, our students learn to apply their knowledge and skills independently and as part of a team to solve professional tasks with a responsible, holistic view. The promotion and further development of communication and personality traits as well as leadership skills also play an important role here. The aim is to enable students to work independently on hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical issues in science and practice. This also includes water chemistry issues (field and laboratory methods) as well as the numerical modelling of flow, transport and chemical reactions in aquatic systems. Students also learn to solve business and environmental law issues in connection with questions of balancing the interests of resource conflicts and the evaluation of resources using modern methods. This should, for example, enable them to independently write and evaluate environmental impact studies. In the first, second and third semesters, the following compulsory modules are part of the programme: Groundwater Chemistry for Groundwater Management – Basics and Advanced Hydrogeology for Groundwater Management – Basics and Advanced Mine Water I and II Geoscientific Communication Environmental Management and Policies International Development and Resources Project Risk Management Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour Resource Management Furthermore, 21 ECTS must be chosen from a wide range of business and technical modules as well as German language courses as elective modules and 12 ECTS from free elective modules. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis (30 ECTS).
