Business Mathematics (MSc)

The Master's degree programme in Business Mathematics of the University of Marburg teaches the necessary professional knowledge, skills and methods of mathematics and economics. In particular, it takes into account the requirements and changes in the professional world (business, industry, public service). In addition, you will be trained to work independently according to scientific principles at an advanced level as well as to analyse and critically assess modern scientific knowledge. You can select from our large variety of electives in both disciplines, to deepen and broaden your knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor's degree programme and gain an overview of the technical contexts of business mathematics. By setting individual focal points, you will study current research literature and write an individual Master's thesis in which an economic mathematical problem is scientifically investigated and an approach to solving it is developed. Together with the study of several practice-oriented subjects, you will thus be in a position to understand and analyse more profound problems from practice. Following the Bologna guidelines on European university education, the course is structured so that 30 credit points (ECTS) should be achieved every semester. The different modules in the Master's programme add up to 120 ECTS: Compulsory Elective Modules in Mathematics (27 to 30 ECTS points) In this study area, you will deepen and broaden your knowledge and competences in different mathematical disciplines, including modern mathematical application methods. Business and Economics Focus Area (24 ECTS points) You can choose one of four focal areas in business and economics, which includes modules teaching in-depth application skills and the ability to further develop solutions in the respective area: Accounting and Finance: internal and external accounting as well as decision and investment theory Market-Oriented Management: a market-oriented perspective on companies Information and Innovation Management: a resource-based perspective on companies Economics: analysis of economic theory and economic policy problems with a focus on the analysis of economic institutions, i.e. the formal and informal rules that influence economic behaviour Free Compulsory Elective Modules (36 to 39 ECTS points) From the long list of electives in mathematics and economics, you can freely select according to your own interests, thereby deepening and broadening your competencies and knowledge from the Bachelor's programme. Furthermore, an internship is to be completed in this area, whereby you can choose from two options: In an external internship, the application of competencies acquired in the course of study will be practised in the professional field of a business mathematician. In an internal internship, you will be concerned with acquiring competencies in the algorithmic implementation of complex mathematical content in software. Master's Thesis (30 ECTS points) The final phase of the course is the Master's thesis. Students apply the skills acquired during the taught part of the programme. You will work on your own research project under the guidance of an experienced professor.
