About this programme

The paramedics studies consist of theoretical studies, clinical skills labs and simulations, multidisciplinary innovation studies, language studies, Bachelor´s thesis and elective studies. About one third of the programme consists of clinical practices in various health care environments, with patient contact. Would you like to study emergency care in English in an international and multicultural environment? In this bilingual paramedics programme, you get a UAS degree in both paramedics and nursing which meets the requirements of the European Union Professional Qualification Directives. You will begin your studies in English without Finnish language requirement. The programme is also suitable for Finnish speakers who wish to study in English. Metropolia's degree programme in paramedic provides broad competence in the prehospital care area. The degree enables you to work as an emergency care provider (ALS paramedic) in the network of urgent care services, in co-operation with other agencies. The core of the degree is the emergency patient in prehospital environment and multiagency co-operation. You learn to assess the need for treatment in non-emergency patients and to guide them to the appropriate service for help. Paramedics work, for example, in ambulances, ER, intensive care units, and high dependency units, in emergency departments. A degree in public health nursing also provides an opportunity to work in health-promoting organizations, in various educational and project positions, and as an independent entrepreneur. In addition to public health nursing competence, the graduate public health nurse is also qualified as registered nurse with strong skills in general nursing. At the beginning of your studies, you will make a personal study plan (PSP). It will be based on the curriculum, your prior learning (RPL) and your individual objectives. During the studies, you can either start learning Finnish from the basics or continue the studies from your own starting level. Finnish language is integrated in the courses from the beginning of the studies. If your first language is not Finnish, the elective studies in your curriculum will be Finnish language studies. If your first language is Finnish, you can select also other elective studies. In daytime studies, various teaching and learning methods are applied. The studies are mostly provided as contact teaching on campus: Both theoretical and laboratory/simulation learning and by training practical. Some theoretical studies take place online. On Myllypuro campus you will be studying in globally unique learning environments, including highly advanced simulation spaces. The studies include a lot of practice in authentic health care environments. After graduation, you will be able to work in Finnish language in Finnish healthcare with excellent employment and career opportunities. Studying in bilingual degree programme will enhance your language skills and ability to work also in international environment. Familiarize yourself with the field-specific requirements on health and functional capacity before submitting your application.
