About this programme

In today’s societies, there is perhaps a greater need than ever to understand the complex processes of social exclusion and to find ways of preventing people from being socially excluded. Therefore, the Master’s Programme offers tools for analysing social exclusion from a multidisciplinary and global perspective. Through examining topical cases you will be given insights into how this phenomenon can be defined and how it differs from related concepts such as minority positions and marginalisation. The programme also teaches methods for analysing and creating strategies that promote practices of social inclusion (globally and locally). You will gain an understanding of social exclusion from multiple perspectives and develop this further through close work with professors of different subjects like the Study of Religions, Theological Ethics and Philosophy of Religion, Global History, Philosophy or Gender Studies. Studying social exclusion from these different subject perspectives will introduce you to diverse, yet relevant thematic content that will further broaden your understanding of the processes of social exclusion.Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to:understand social exclusion from a multidisciplinary perspective, retrieve and present advanced knowledge on social exclusion including its manifestations over through time and space, communicate knowledge about and issues related to social exclusion to different audiences, analyse cases of social exclusion independently with emphasis on its multifaceted and complex character nature, critically examine social exclusion from different subject perspectives, focusing on related methodologies and theories within that subject area, plan and conduct relevant and ethically-informed research, evaluate and contribute to practices and policies of social inclusivity. For more information: https://blogs.abo.fi/socialexclusion/
