About this programme
The following major subjects are included in the Doctoral Programme in Biosciences and Drug Research:BiochemistryCell BiologyEnvironmental and Marine BiologyBiochemical research at Åbo Akademi University mainly focuses on structural bioinformatics and modeling of molecular interactions, lipid and membrane biochemistry, lipid transfer protein research and research on cyanobacterial peptide toxins. The main focus points in cell biological research at Åbo Akademi are cell stress, cell survival and cell death, cellular decision-making processes, the role of the cytoskeleton as well as the relation between inflammatory processes and tissue damages, tissue regeneration and -degeneration. The main focus of research in environmental and marine biology is coastal and archipelago ecosystems in the Baltic Sea, with a strong international profile and activity in Nordic, European and global research projects and networks. The focus areas include e.g. marine biodiversity, benthic community ecology, stress ecology, food web analysis, behavioural and evolutionary ecology, island plant communities, seabird ecology and marine spatial planning. Drug DevelopmentPharmacyThe focal point in pharmaceutical research at Åbo Akademi University is drug design and development. Much of the research is centred around pharmaceutical technology and focuses on various areas within pharmaceutical development as well as new manufacturing and formulation technologies. 3D printing, microfluidics and nanotechnology for drug delivery and diagnostics (nanomedicine) are some of the areas on which research is focused.
