TOEFL Reading: three task types, fifty items, thirty minutes
TOEFL iBT Reading is now roughly 50 items in about 30 minutes, across three task types. That is well under a minute an item, which makes this a test of speed as much as comprehension — and it is the single biggest change from the test most preparation material still describes.
The three task types
| Task type | What it is | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Complete the Words | Short items testing vocabulary and word form directly | Breadth of vocabulary, and speed |
| Read in Daily Life | Practical, non-academic texts | Locating functional information quickly |
| Read an Academic Passage | The closest thing to the old reading section | Comprehension of argument and detail |
If a guide tells you to prepare for "Prose Summary", "Insert Text" or "Rhetorical Purpose" questions, it is describing the TOEFL before 21 January 2026. Those question types are not in the current test.
What the clock changes
Fifty items in thirty minutes removes the strategy that worked on the old test — reading a passage carefully, then returning to it for each question. There is no time to re-read. What replaces it is answering at a steady pace and accepting that some items get a quick, reasoned choice rather than a certain one.
- Do not stall. An item you cannot place inside about forty seconds should get your best answer and a move on.
- There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so nothing should be left blank.
- Vocabulary breadth pays here more than on any other section, because one whole task type tests it directly.
The section adapts
The test adjusts as you answer, so the number of items and the exact time can vary. Two practical consequences: difficulty is feedback rather than failure — a section that feels hard usually means you are being placed high — and you cannot plan around a fixed item count.
Students who read a hard section as going badly start rushing, and the rushing is what actually costs the marks. Treat an uncomfortable section as a good sign.
