PTE Write from Dictation

You hear a sentence once and type it. It feeds Listening and Writing, is scored per correct word, and improves faster with practice than anything else in PTE — which together make it the best return on preparation time in the test.

Why it rewards practice so well

Every correct word scores. There is no all-or-nothing threshold, so a sentence recovered two-thirds intact is worth two-thirds. And the skill it needs — holding a sentence while typing it — is trainable in a way that comprehension is not.

  • Type the words you are sure of first, then fill the gaps from memory of the rhythm.
  • Spelling counts, since the item feeds Writing.
  • Capitalisation and punctuation matter far less than the words themselves.
  • There is no penalty, so write something for every sentence.

A method under pressure

  1. Listen to the whole sentence without typing. Starting early loses the end.
  2. Scribble the content words on the erasable board as you listen, if that helps you hold them.
  3. Type immediately after the audio, fastest first.
  4. Re-read once for obvious typos, then submit.

This item usually comes last, when concentration is lowest after two hours. Knowing that it is the highest-value item in the test is itself worth something at that point.
