German Schreiben: the informal message

A message to a friend or family member. The choice of du governs far more than the pronoun: the greeting, the closing, the verb endings and the whole tone follow from it, and mixing registers is the most visible error in this task.

Everything follows from du

Informal
Greeting Liebe Anna, / Lieber Jonas, / Hallo Sara,
Pronoun du, dich, dir, dein
Verb du hast, du kannst, du schreibst
Imperative Komm! Schreib mir! Ruf an!
Closing Liebe Grüße, / Viele Grüße, / Bis bald,

A single *Sie* in an otherwise informal message, or *Mit freundlichen Grüßen* at the end of a note to a friend, is a register error that a marker notices immediately.

Structure

  1. Greeting.
  2. An opening line — thanking them for their message, or apologising for not writing.
  3. One paragraph per Leitpunkt.
  4. A closing line and a sign-off.

The opening line is worth having ready: *vielen Dank für deine Nachricht*, *entschuldige, dass ich mich so lange nicht gemeldet habe*. It costs nothing and makes the message read like a real one.
