Introducing yourself, the way the A1 exam asks for it

The first speaking task at A1 is predictable. Six sentences, prepared properly, cover it.

7 min read

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 speaking part opens with a self-introduction built from set fields — name, age, country, where you live, languages, job or study, hobbies — and then asks you to spell something and give a number, usually your phone number or postcode.

That is a small, knowable set, and the students who do badly are almost always the ones who prepared content but not delivery.

Six sentences to own:

  • Ich heiße … / Mein Name ist …
  • Ich komme aus Indien, aus Kochi.
  • Ich wohne jetzt in …
  • Ich spreche Englisch, Hindi und ein bisschen Deutsch.
  • Ich bin Student / Ich arbeite als …
  • In meiner Freizeit … (spiele ich Cricket / lese ich gern).

Then the two mechanical bits. Spelling: learn the alphabet properly, especially the letters that trap English speakers — e (sounds like "ay"), i ("ee"), j ("yot"), v ("fau"), w ("vay"), y ("ypsilon"), z ("tset"), and ß ("Eszett" or "scharfes S"). Numbers: German says the units before the tens — einundzwanzig is literally "one-and-twenty" — so 47 is siebenundvierzig. Practise saying your own phone number until it is automatic, because you will be asked for it.

Two habits that carry marks beyond A1. Use gern to say you like doing something (Ich lese gern) rather than reaching for a construction you do not control yet. And answer with a full sentence: "Woher kommen Sie?" answered with "Indien" is an answer; "Ich komme aus Indien" is German.

Do this now

Five to ten minutes. This is the part that moves your band.

Record yourself giving the six sentences, then spelling your surname and saying your phone number in German. Play it back. Anything you hesitated on gets written out and repeated ten times aloud today. Two minutes of recording, five of drilling.
