IELTS vs PTE: Which Is Better for Study Abroad?

Both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic test the same four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — but they deliver and score them very differently. IELTS has a computer-delivered and (in some centres) a paper option, and its Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with a human examiner. PTE Academic is fully computer-based, and your spoken answers are recorded and scored by an AI engine.

The headline differences that matter most to Indian students are:

• Human vs machine speaking: IELTS suits students who are comfortable talking to a person; PTE suits those who prefer speaking into a microphone without an examiner watching.
• Integrated scoring: In PTE, one task can score multiple skills at once (for example, reading aloud affects both reading and speaking), which some students find generous and others find unforgiving.
• Result speed: PTE often returns scores faster, which helps if you are close to an application deadline.

Format and section-by-section breakdown

Understanding the exact tasks helps you predict where you will score well. Here is how each test is built:

IELTS Academic

• Listening (~30 min): four recordings, 40 questions, everyday and academic contexts.
• Reading (60 min): three long academic passages, 40 questions.
• Writing (60 min): Task 1 (describe a graph/chart) and Task 2 (essay).
• Speaking (11-14 min): a real conversation with an examiner in three parts.

PTE Academic

• Speaking & Writing (~54-67 min): read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, essay and more.
• Reading (~30 min): fill in blanks, reorder paragraphs, multiple choice.
• Listening (~30-43 min): summarise spoken text, highlight correct summary, write from dictation.

Scoring explained: bands vs the 90-point scale

IELTS reports an overall band from 0 to 9 (in half-band steps) plus a band for each skill. PTE reports an overall score from 10 to 90, again with a score per skill. Universities publish minimums in whichever scale they prefer, and most also publish an equivalence.

As an indicative guide only (always confirm with the specific university):

• IELTS 6.0 ≈ PTE 50-58
• IELTS 6.5 ≈ PTE 58-64
• IELTS 7.0 ≈ PTE 65-72
• IELTS 7.5 ≈ PTE 73-78

Two practical points. First, many programmes set a minimum per section (for example, no band below 6.0), and PTE's integrated scoring can make it easier — or harder — to lift a weak skill. Acceptance: universities and visas

Both tests are very widely accepted, but acceptance is never universal, so this is the single most important thing to verify before you book.

• Universities: The vast majority of institutions in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand accept both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic. In the USA, acceptance of PTE has grown a lot but a few programmes still prefer IELTS or TOEFL.
• Student visas: Both are accepted for many student-visa routes, including UKVI (note that the UK visa route requires IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI — a specific version, not the standard one). Requirements change, so confirm the current rule for your country.

Cost, dates and how to decide

Fees in India are broadly similar for both tests — indicatively around Rs 16,000-17,000, though this varies by city and changes over time, so check the official booking site. Both offer frequent dates across Tamil Nadu and Kerala centres, and both let you rebook if you need a retake.

Here is a simple way to choose:

1. Pick PTE if you type fast, stay calm speaking to a computer, want quicker results, and like a fully digital experience.
2. Pick IELTS if you are more comfortable speaking to a person, prefer clearly separated sections, or your target university/visa route specifically prefers it.
