Overall band vs individual band scores

This trips up many students: universities usually specify both an overall band (e.g. 6.5) and a minimum in each section (e.g. no band below 6.0). You can hit the overall target and still fall short if one section (often Writing or Speaking) is below the floor. So plan to be strong across all four modules — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — not just on average.

Typical requirements by country

• UK: commonly 6.0–6.5 overall for many courses, higher for competitive/clinical programs; UKVI IELTS may be needed for certain routes.
• USA: often 6.5–7.0 overall; top programs and some fields expect more.
• Canada: often 6.0–6.5 overall; the popular SDS study-permit route typically expects 6.0 in each band.
• Australia: often 6.0–6.5+ overall, with visa-linked English requirements.

IELTS alternatives — PTE, TOEFL & Duolingo
