UK student visa interview
Whether a UK student visa involves an interview, and what it covers. Not every route has one, and where there is no formal interview there is often still a credibility assessment — which asks the same questions in a different form.

The position for this country
There is no compulsory face-to-face "visa interview" for every applicant, but two things are effectively standard. (1) Biometrics are required: GOV.UK states "you'll need to prove your identity as part of your application" — in India this normally means booking an appointment at a UK visa application centre (VFS Global) to give your fingerprints and a digital photograph and to submit/scan your documents. Some applicants are instead eligible to verify identity remotely using the free UK Immigration: ID Check app. There is no separate fee for the biometric enrolment itself, though the centre may charge for optional add-on services. (2) A credibility interview is possible and is common for Indian applicants: under the Home Office Student and Child Student caseworker guidance, applicants may be interviewed to test the genuine student requirement. The guidance states that "in all cases the caseworker must refuse the application if they are not satisfied on the balance of probability that the applicant is a genuine student", and that where an applicant "is found not credible at interview, the case will be passed to the caseworker". Interviews are usually conducted by video/telephone in English and cover your course and modules, why you chose that university and the UK, your academic and English-test background, who is funding you and how, and your post-study intentions. Answer in your own words — reciting an agent's script is a recognised credibility red flag. A TB chest X-ray at an approved clinic is also required for Indian applicants (see documents).
What is actually being assessed
Every student visa interview, whatever it is called, is testing one thing: whether you are a genuine student who intends to study, can afford it, and whose plan makes sense. The questions vary; that question does not.
- Why this course? An answer that could apply to any course is the most common weakness.
- Why this university, and why this country? Specific reasons, not rankings.
- Who is funding you, and how? Your answer must match your documents exactly.
- What will you do afterwards? Coherent with the course and with your background.
Preparing properly
- Know your own application. Inconsistency with what you submitted is the fastest way to a refusal.
- Be able to say what the course contains — modules, not just its title.
- Know who is paying, how much, and where it came from.
- Answer briefly and directly. Over-explaining reads as rehearsed.
- Do not memorise answers. Credibility assessments are designed to detect exactly that.
Our mock visa interview tool at /mock-visa-interview runs these questions with feedback, which is a better use of preparation time than reading lists of questions.
Interview — FAQs

The position for this country is set out above from the official guidance. Where no formal interview exists, a credibility assessment often covers the same ground.
Why this course, why this university and country, who is funding you, and what you intend to do afterwards. Your answers must match your submitted documents.
