Canada student visa processing time

How long a Canada student visa takes, as the authority itself publishes it. Published times are averages in normal conditions, and the gap between an average and your application is where most of the anxiety in this process lives.

At a glance

VisaStudy permit (issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). The study permit is not a visa — if approved, IRCC also issues a temporary resident visa (visitor visa) or eTA in the same decision so you can travel to Canada. Indian passport holders receive a TRV stamped in the passport.

The published time

IRCC's published processing time for a study permit applied for from OUTSIDE Canada by an applicant in India is 5 weeks (IRCC processing-times tool, "Study permit outside Canada — India", last updated 12 August 2026; the tool is refreshed weekly). IRCC states these times are an estimate, not a maximum or a guarantee, and the clock only starts once a complete application has been submitted — missing documents cause delays. Time spent booking and giving biometrics, and any medical exam, is in addition. Quebec-bound students should also allow separate time for the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) from the province before applying to IRCC.

What makes an individual application slower

  • An incomplete application. Anything the officer has to ask for restarts your place in the queue.
  • Documents needing verification — qualifications, employment history, unusual funding.
  • Peak season. Every route slows before its main intake, which is exactly when most students apply.
  • Administrative processing, where additional checks are triggered. It has no published timeline anywhere.

The first is the only one you control, and it is also the most common. A complete, internally consistent application is the single best thing you can do for your own timeline.

Working backwards from your intake

  1. Fix the date you must arrive — often before the course start, for orientation or accommodation.
  2. Subtract the published processing time above.
  3. Subtract a buffer for peak season and for any document you may be asked to supply.
  4. Subtract the time to assemble the application, including the financial evidence holding period.
  5. That is your application date, and it is usually earlier than students expect.

The financial holding period is what pushes this earliest. If funds must sit in an account for a continuous period before you apply, that period starts before everything else on this list.

Processing time — FAQs

The published time is quoted above from the official source. It is an average in normal conditions — peak season and any additional checks extend it.

Some routes offer a priority service for a fee. Where none exists, a complete and consistent application is the only lever you have.
