About this programme
The Master’s Degree Programme in Faith, Crises and Existential Wellbeing (FACE) is offered by the School of Theology and is part of the newly established subject area, Theology of Wellbeing. The programme is taught entirely in English. It addresses contemporary challenges faced by individuals and societies, focusing on the intersections of people’s meaning systems—such as religious one—and their connections with existential wellbeing, and individual and collective crises. The programme aims to educate experts with deep understanding in how individuals and societies cope in times of personal or collective crisis, such as serious illness or global pandemics. The focus centers on the role of their fundamental beliefs, whether religious, spiritual or other. The curriculum is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on connections among theological disciplines, the humanities, and the social sciences. The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practice. Graduates will be well-prepared for both professional roles and doctoral studies that demand theological expertise. Work-based learning is integrated into the programme to enhance real-world readiness. Applied studies provide expertise in pastoral care and counselling or in a selected NGO field. Finnish-speaking students may also complete Applied studies for a post at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Students will develop practical skills relevant to working life, including generalist sectors, preparing them for roles that require theological insight—whether in research, NGOs, faith-based organisarions, or other professional contexts.
