The general aim of the Master’s programme in Computer Science is to provide a research-oriented programme of study. On the basis of a broad understanding of the subject area with select areas of emphasis, creative and constructive abilities to produce and develop hardware and software systems are nurtured and honed. In addition, the students’ basic research and applied research skills in the field of computer science are developed and enhanced. Career Prospects Building on one’s initial career-qualifying degree, this Master’s programme provides knowledge and competencies that enable graduates to pursue doctoral research – e.g. in a doctoral programme – or to engage in complex industrial or freelance activities in the areas of research, development, implementation, distribution, or maintenance. Typical areas of activity for computer scientists with a Master’s degree are the development of new methods and systems for information processing (e.g. for manufacturing corporations, software companies, and research institutions), the introduction of automated information processing systems in companies or administrative departments, and activities relating to operations, as well as product maintenance and distribution in the computer industry. On the basis of a broad understanding of the subject area with select areas of emphasis, creative and constructive abilities to produce and develop hardware and software systems are nurtured and honed. In addition, the students’ basic research and applied research skills in the field of computer science are developed and enhanced. Course Structure & Content The degree programme enables graduates to work successfully in the field of computer science throughout their entire professional lives. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to not only teach students content relevant to the present, but also theoretically sound concepts and methods that will remain valid long after current trends have passed. This includes, in particular, the areas of formal, algorithmic, and mathematical skills; analysis, design, realisation and project management competencies; technological competencies, as well as social and personal skills. In addition, the degree programme focuses on two specifications that distinguish it from other degree programmes: a bilingual education in English and German for both foreign and German students, and project-oriented work in several subject areas to teach the general skills mentioned above. In total, you will need to gain 120 ECTS points from the following areas: Computer Science (35-45 ECTS points) Projects (30-31 ECTS points)  Language (15-24 ECTS points) Master’s thesis (30 ECTS points) Specialist expertise through additional certificates Artificial intelligence, data science or robotics & automation – specialists score with these topics on the job market. The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bayreuth has therefore established a certificate programme with which our students can expand their subject expertise in a targeted manner and thus significantly increase their attractiveness for potential employers. To obtain a certificate in "Artificial Intelligence", "Data Science", or "Robotics and Automation", students must earn 60 ECTS in the respective specialised courses. Since the courses that qualify for the certificate are also part of the regular course offerings, students can seamlessly integrate the certificate into their degree programme by completing the required courses.
