Mathematics and Computer Science

Mathematics and Computer Science is an interdisciplinary Master's programme with an equal share of mathematics and computer science, and it provides the opportunity to combine the two disciplines in seminars and project modules.  Recent developments in both fields show that they are increasingly interrelated. For example, mathematics involving algorithms (optimisation, statistics and data science, scientific and high-performance computing, image processing, etc.) or computer science requiring mathematical background (machine learning, computer vision, process mining, quantum computing, etc.). The Master's programme is designed for people with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or computer science, or related fields at the interface. We expect a solid background knowledge in the foundations of both fields, which have to be documented during the application procedure.  We promise cutting-edge training in both fields, individualised learning with 1:1 supervision, an application-oriented focus and excellent career prospects in Germany and abroad. With their mix of mathematical foundations and programming project experience, alumni have all the tools to be pioneers of digital transformation.  The programme consists of the following course categories (called module groups): Mathematics (27%) Focus on applied and algorithm-related mathematics (modelling, optimisation) Wide range of elective courses possible in pure and applied mathematics Computer Science (27%) Focus on computer science with mathematical background (machine learning, deep learning, data science, quantum computing) Also possible lab courses (e.g. Isabelle Lab, Embedded Hardware Lab) Seminar / Application Module / Scientific Project Work (21%) Science project in 1:1 supervision Application module to glimpse into applications of both fields (e.g. computational materials science) Two seminars: Mathematics seminar and Computer Science seminar  Master's thesis (25%)
