Successful business increasingly depends on the use and professional handling of sophisticated mathematical methods – for example, in financial services. Conversely, mathematicians in many professions are confronted with economic contexts in which an in-depth economic education represents a decisive competitive advantage over mathematicians with a different specialisation. The profile of the Master's degree course in Business Mathematics at Trier University is based on these considerations. Building on a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Mathematics or Business Mathematics, the Master's degree at Trier University is designed to enable graduates to know and apply all essential and fundamental theories, procedures and methods of the applied mathematics disciplines analysis, numerical mathematics, optimisation, and stochastics, and also to introduce them to the international research front in selected subject areas. In addition, students should acquire in-depth knowledge of supplementary topics in economics. This is primarily made possible by completing a considerable number of mathematics-related modules in the Master's degree programmes in economics. The economics portion of the credit points amounts to one-third. The integration of economics and mathematics content is supported by interdisciplinary seminars and the possibility of an interdisciplinary Master's thesis. The course is characterised by a high degree of elective options.
