About this programme

The focal area Engineering Physics is designed for students with a strong interest in physics-based approaches within engineering. It focuses on electromagnetically-dominated and multiphysical systems in which electric and magnetic fields, waves, particles, transport processes, material properties, and non-linear dynamics are strongly coupled. The programme combines a solid foundation in electromagnetic field theory, quantum mechanics, plasma technology, photonics, and microsystems technology with modern methods of theoretical analysis, modelling, simulation, experimental diagnostics, and laboratory work. Students learn to analyse complex physical and technological systems theoretically, investigate them experimentally, model them quantitatively, and contribute to their technological realisation. The focal area includes courses on plasma technology, photonics, quantum mechanics, fields, waves and particles, microsystems, and plasma diagnostics and laboratory experiments. Students can further specialise in competence areas such as plasma engineering, photonics, microsystems technology, and modelling and simulation. Engineering Physics provides a research-oriented profile within the Master's programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. It prepares students for scientific and industrial careers in modern high-technology fields, including plasma and surface technology, optical technologies, semiconductor and microsystems technology, numerical simulation, and related areas of applied physics and engineering. The Master’s programme is research-oriented and spans two years and encompasses 120 ECTS credits. It aims to equip you with advanced knowledge and skills needed to excel in the dynamic fields of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Engineering Physics is one of three areas of specialisation offered entirely in English. The programme is designed to provide a balanced and in-depth learning experience, divided into four key areas, each worth 30 CP: Compulsory courses (30 CP) The compulsory courses, typically completed in the first two semesters, lay the foundation for your specialised studies. These courses ensure a solid understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin your chosen area of specialisation.   Compulsory elective courses (30 CP) The compulsory elective courses allow you to tailor your education to your interests and career goals. Choose from a variety of courses that align with your academic passions. Additionally, participate in a seminar (3 CP) and a laboratory practical (3 CP) to gain hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art research labs and engage in cutting-edge scientific discourse.   Free elective area (30 CP) Broaden your horizons by selecting from the diverse offerings at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the University Alliance Ruhr. You can choose further courses in your field of specialisation or another engineering discipline, or focus on soft skills such as language courses, intercultural competence, etc. This area is also well-suited for a study abroad experience, for example, through one of our numerous co-operations within the Erasmus programme.   Master’s thesis (30 CP) The Master’s thesis is a capstone project where you demonstrate your ability to tackle complex engineering challenges with innovative solutions. Over a six-month period, you will independently conduct research using scientific methods, applying both technical and interdisciplinary skills. You will document your findings in a comprehensive written report and present your key results in a colloquium lecture to showcase your presentation and argumentation skills.
