About this programme

The Master’s programme in Biomedical Engineering focuses on the interdisciplinary collaboration of engineering, natural sciences, and medicine to develop advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Students gain comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in imaging techniques, signal processing, and image analysis, with a strong emphasis on applications in medical technology as well as engineering fields such as the automotive industry and process engineering. Students explore modules such as Tomographic Imaging, Ultrasound Imaging, Digital and Statistical Signal Processing, Biomedical Systems, and Image Processing. They gain expertise in electromagnetic and acoustic wave fields, modelling and simulations, sensor technology, measurement instrumentation and control engineering, stochastic signal processing, image reconstruction and processing, pattern recognition and machine/deep learning, and information technology. Through the Master’s seminar and practical training, students engage in scientific literature reviews, specialised knowledge acquisition, and the application of engineering principles to address medical needs. They practice critical reflection, systematic concept implementation, and the development of innovative solutions. The international academic environment offers students the opportunity to gain intercultural work experience, enhancing their soft skills, and preparing them for a global career. This programme provides a solid foundation for students aiming to work in medical engineering research and development, preparing them to address critical health challenges through early detection, accurate diagnosis, effective therapy, and disease prevention leading to impactful careers in improving human health and well-being. Graduates are well-prepared to tackle complex technical and scientific problems in various industries, also beyond medical technology, e.g. automotive and process engineering, or to pursue a PhD to become independent researchers in the respective fields. They are equipped to independently analyse, solve, and document research and development challenges, using current technical language and terminology to communicate their findings effectively. The research-oriented Master’s programme spans two years and encompasses 120 ECTS credits. It aims to equip you with advanced knowledge and skills needed to excel in the dynamic fields of electrical engineering and information technology. Biomedical Engineering is one of three areas of specialisation offered entirely in English. The programme is designed to provide a balanced and in-depth learning experience, divided into four key areas, each worth 30 CP: Compulsory courses (30 CP) The compulsory courses, typically completed in the first two semesters, lay the foundation for your specialised studies. These courses ensure a solid understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin your chosen area of specialisation. Compulsory elective courses (30 CP) The compulsory elective courses allow you to tailor your education to your interests and career goals. Choose from a variety of courses that align with your academic passions. Additionally, students participate in a seminar (3 CP) and a laboratory practical (3 CP) to gain hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art research labs and engage in cutting-edge scientific discourse. Free elective area (30 CP) Broaden your horizons by selecting from the diverse offerings at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the University Alliance Ruhr. You can choose further courses in your field of specialisation or another engineering discipline, or focus on soft skills such as language courses, intercultural competence and so on.
