About this programme
The Chemistry Master's degree programme aims at enabling students to independently solve complex problems that go beyond their individual knowledge using a large variety of scientific methods that are taught in the course of the degree programme. The degree programme has a strong research focus. Research activities at the Chemistry department touch different areas of chemistry, ranging from fundamental research (e.g. element-metal multiple bonds, reaction paths) to applied research (e.g. sensors, catalysis). The Chemistry Master's degree is a consecutive programme that builds on the Bachelor's degree in chemistry offered at the University of Bonn. Thus, the programme mainly addresses students that have already obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Students who have graduated from a Bachelor's degree programme in another field may also be admitted, provided that they meet all relevant requirements. The structure of the programme is modular. Whereas the first semester consists of compulsory modules, students can choose from a large variety of elective modules during their second and third semesters. The elective modules include practical laboratory courses teaching advanced techniques. A focusing laboratory course prepares students for the Master's thesis, in which they conduct autonomous scientific research in one of the chemical working groups at the University of Bonn. After successful completion of all modules (including the Master’s thesis), the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Bonn confers the academic degree of Master of Science.
