Nursing

Within the degree programme of Nursing you will study nursing (e.g. internal and surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, geriatric nursing and mental health), medicine and natural sciences (e.g. anatomy and physiology). You will also learn the basics of research and developmental work as well as leadership. The studies are carried out in close cooperation with working life, e.g. through projects carried out both individually and in groups. The education contains both theoretical and practical studies. Scientific thinking is considered important as a base for developing patient-centered and evidence-based practice in the context of nursing. Emphasis is placed on personal development, self-awareness, empathy and ethical conduct. The education aims at encouraging students to develop their critical and analytical thinking, and problem solving skills.  The aim of the degree programme in nursing is to educate competent nurses with good knowledge of encountering, supervising and caring for patients within different areas of nursing and health care. The education provides you with competencies to work in different health care settings, from open counselling centres to intensive care units. You can choose to work with children, youth, grown-ups or elderly, in Finland or abroad. When graduating from Diak you qualify as a registered nurse with EU competence.  Working in health care means taking personal responsibility and gives you plenty of opportunities for self-development. You work in multi-professional teams together with both the client and her/his close ones. The work also requires participation in planning, implementation and evaluation of changes within the health care system.  You will be working in a field where you constantly need to update and expand your knowledge, therefore life-long learning is emphasized in your studies. You will receive support in learning to work independently and take personal responsibility. The curriculum follows both our national and the European Union’s directives for competencies.
