What B2 adds
- Abstraction. Topics move beyond your own life to issues and ideas.
- Argument. You present a view, support it, and respond to an opposing one.
- Register. Formal and informal writing become genuinely different.
- Speed. Listening is at natural pace with no accommodation.
The step from B1 to B2 is mostly about handling argument and abstraction. The step from B2 to C1 is mostly about doing it with precision and under academic conditions, and it typically takes longer.
Where B2 is enough
- Some German-taught bachelor programmes.
- Recognition routes for nursing and several regulated professions.
- TestDaF results in the B2–C1 band, where some faculties accept the lower end.
- Most workplaces, for a role that is not language-centred.
Check the specific faculty rather than the university. German universities frequently set language requirements at department level, and the difference between B2 and C1 can decide an application.
